Private label on a type-approved vehicle: what is possible

Your name on the plate: yes, usually. Your name on the approval: no, not without a new type-approval. The line between them is where most private-label projects fail.

Last reviewed 5 November 2026

Every dealer eventually asks. Can we put our name on it? The answer is a qualified yes, and the qualification matters more than the yes: the plate can carry your name, the certificate cannot, and one of those is checked at registration.

Four levels, four answers #

LevelExampleApproval impact
L1 AppearanceColour, decals, seat trim, box finish, packagingNone. Normal order.
L2 ConfigurationBattery capacity and chemistry, instrumentation, optionsMay create a different variant. Certified range applies to the tested configuration.
L3 Private labelYour name on the nameplate and the packagingPermitted only where the plate remains consistent with the certificate.
L4 New developmentNew body, new chassis, new categoryA new type-approval. Outside what most suppliers will take on.

Why the plate cannot simply say anything #

A certificate of conformity names the manufacturer holding the approval. The statutory plate on the vehicle has to agree. A registration office compares the two, and a mismatch is a refusal — not a query, a refusal. The vehicle is fine; the paperwork is not, and the paperwork is what gets the plate.

Where branding changes who you are Placing a vehicle on the EU market under your own trade mark can make you the manufacturer for product-safety purposes, with the technical file, conformity assessment and recall obligations that follow. That is a decision for your own legal advice. It is not a free branding feature, and a supplier who presents it as one is doing you no favours.

What a workable private-label project looks like #

  1. 01
Name the model and the market

The category and the national route decide what is even possible.

  2. 02
    Confirm the level

L1 is routine. L2 and L3 need a written answer on whether the variant or the plate can carry the change.

  3. 03
    One unit first

Ship a single vehicle with the full document set, so your registration office sees exactly what a customer will see.

  4. 04
    Then batch

Same configuration, same documents. Changing configuration between batches is what breaks the file.

The four walls, in one paragraph #

The manufacturer named on the certificate cannot be changed by a dealer. The statutory plate must agree with the certificate. The only lawful routes to a genuinely different name on the approval are a new variant or version accepted by the holder, or a small-series approval valid in the issuing country. And the manufacturer identifier in the VIN belongs to the manufacturer, not to the brand. Those four facts bound every private-label project in this category.
